Dell drops price $100

Micron drops price $200.
04-29-97
Gateway drops prices again (and so does Winbook), but Dell is still the value
leader.
04-24-97
Added my own initial scores for Dell and Micron.
04-17-97
Added Performance Table and updated features list.
04-11-97
Micron drops its price and so does Gateway! Micron is now $250 lower and
Gateway dropped another $150.

Prices are dropping! Gateway 2000 and Dell have dropped their prices, luckily
they both have a price-protection guarantee (as does WinBook, but Micron has
an "unofficial" one... so don't count on Micron). The Gateway and Dell are
lower by about $200 to $300.

So far this is what I've got on current prices for MMX notebooks. Please
note that I am only trying to list MOBILE MMX notebooks, desktop-based
MMX chip notebooks will be noted if they appear.
The common features unless otherwise noted are as follows:
- 12.1" TFT (Active Matrix) Screen
- 32 MB RAM
- 1.4 GB Hard Disk (this used to be 2.1 GB but I lowered it)
[Performance Table]
Dell Latitude LM-166ST: $3498*
- Has 40 MB RAM
- Add $149 for 3-year warranty, parts and labor ($3647*)
- 8x-12x CD-ROM
- Office 97 Small Business Edition
- No Zoomed Video or CardBus Support
- Has a $3199* configuration with only 16MB RAM, 1.4" HDD
Micron Transport XPE 166 MMX: $3850*
- 8x CD-ROM
- 5 year warranty on CPU and memory, 3 year parts, 1 year labor
- Zoomed Video and CardBus Support
- Special that includes 2/3 year labor right now
Gateway Solo 2200-166: $3699
- 32 MB EDO RAM
- Add $100 for 3-year warranty ($3799)
- 1.3 GB HDD
- 6x-11x CD-ROM
- Office 97 Small Business Edition
- Zoomed Video Support only (no CardBus)
Winbook FX 166MMX: $3599
You have to call or look in their ads for their prices, their website is
useless when it comes to specs or prices but I have been told by WinBook that
they are updating it in the near future.
- Internal 33.6 modem
- Add $299 for 3-year warranty ($3898)
- 2.1 GB HDD
- No Zoomed Video or CardBus support
- Add $80 for touchpad
Shipping times on all these units are 3 to 6 weeks.
Here are some others:
AMS Tech 2010: $4799 (street price)
- 13.3" screen
- 512 KB L2 cache
- Internal 33.6 modem
- 10x CD-ROM
- I'm not sure about the chip, AMS Tech says mobile-PGA
- Is available for shipping NOW (which makes me suspicious about the chip)!
- They also have a 200MMX for $4999 but I think this is also a desktop chip
AMS Tech 188: $3500?? (estimated street price)
- 16 MB EDO RAM
- 6x CD-ROM
- AMS Tech says this model uses the TCP, this I believe because this unit
will not be available until end of March (like the other guys).
- Won't be available until end of April now.
If you know of some other notebooks belong here, let me know. And I don't
think I have to tell you that these prices are subject to change (even as I
write this).

*Notes:
- These numbers are from the Computer Shopper, no numbers are available for
the WinBook or the AMS machines yet.
- The Dell's performance was based on 24MB, the price reflects 40MB. The
numbers will go up about 3-5% for the extra memory.
- The Gateway used Win96 OEM 2 so the disk scores are not directly
comparable.
